stretching the church and culture connection

  1. You are right Dave, these videos are proactive. The two videos I enjoyed were the "Lord save us from our followers" and "Churches in Pubs". For the first video, the people capitalized on CONVERSATION. The reason why I capitalized CONVERSATION is because that is what's missing. Even in the second video, conversation was a key factor for open conversations about theology and christian thought. In all honesty, I would be completely fine with having a beer, sitting down with a pastor/folllower of Christ and talking about God. Some of the greatest conversations I have had are over a beer and being with friends. It is refreshing, at least to me, for people to finally be open minded to having church not at "church".

  2. God was able to feed 5,000 people and didn't have to pay for the food, so why should we? That was absolutely hilarious and everything that came after it was amazing. They didn't get rotten food, but rather excess food that people were throwing out. I loved this video because it goes to show that you don't need money to help others. There are so many ways you can go about giving back to your community and to others without having to reach into your pockets. This video could definitely help me with my final assignment because to me, this is something Jesus would do.

  3. I think my favorite video was "Lord Save Us from Your Followers". Sometimes as Christians we need to stop and think about how our actions and words represent the message of Jesus. Hateful is not a word that should be associated with either. I also loved the Brandt movie trailer. Very powerful footage and makes you count your blessings.

  5. The "Lord Save Us from Your Followers" one was definitely the most thought provoking. It's easy as a Christian to know how we should treat and love others but actually doing it can be the most difficult thing in the world. On the last three videos I couldn't help but think that though I'm sure everyone involved has good intentions, I have to wonder about what they hope to accomplish. It seems like they are just trying to capitalize on what's popular.

  6. I found these videos to be heartwarming. The Makeover Brothel Edition really struck a chord with me. When I was in my early 20's I made friends with one of my neighbors. I knew she had a rough childhood and she was struggling to raise her infant daughter. We lost touch for a few years and recently, she found me on Facebook. One day we had the chance to catch up on each others lives. She ended up being deported to Mexico. She lost custody of her 6 children. She has been working in the sex industry because she feel like she has no other choice. I imagine that she lives in a place similar to what the video showed, if not worse. I think it is really cool what that church is doing. This is love in action, real love, not a love that just goes through the motions.

The Least of These trailer was good, too. I was brought to tears when it showed the homeless people getting their feet washed.

  7. I enjoyed all of the videos. "Lord Save Us from Your Followers" had a great message. People are often misguided and need to remember that the teachings of Jesus represent love. The "Extreme Makeover Brothel" was an excellent idea. The people in that video are great examples of what Christians should be. They were caring, selfless, loving, people who wanted to make a difference and spread the word of God. I youtubed the outcome and it was amazing!

  8. The videos that stood out to me were; The Least of These, Lord Save Us From Your Followers, and the last three videos. The least of these brought me to tears as well. It shows how wasteful and selfish we can be. The Lord Save Us From Your Followers showed how those people endorsed the total opposite of what Jesus came to teach us. The PBS videos were interesting, the first video focuses on the beauty of the churches and how the buildings should be preserved for future generations, which no longer attend. I can go on for days about why I think the Catholic church has lost so many followers, they are stuck on tradition and they need to build on substance, having a beautiful building with history is not enough. I don't think that churches in pubs is a bad idea, I think everyone needs to find what feeds their soul. I thought the McMass project was hilarious, it just might work!

  10. These videos are great and some of them are just plain crazy! Antisematic Shirley Roper is one crazy lady. How can she consider herself religious after saying all of those horrible things. I do not understand what comes over people when they think that these things they are saying are ok. The least of these was a great video even though it was so sad. We are such wasteful people and we should all be doing more to help out the less fortunate like these guys do. As a country we could be helping so many people if we would all stop taking things for granted and wasting so much.
